Old City site, conserved by Israel Antiquities Authority, to be unveiled in special ceremony Wednesday

The Old City walls of Jerusalem were built in the 16th century by Sultan Suleiman, the ruler of the Ottoman Empire (1520-1566 CE), and they are some of Jerusalem’s most important cultural heritage assets.

As part of the “Jerusalem City Walls” project, which the Israel Antiquities Authority Conservation Department has directed since April 2007, with funding from the Prime Minister’s Office and administered by the Jerusalem Development Authority and the Jerusalem Municipality, extensive measures have been taken for the purpose of conserving and rehabilitating the Old City walls – in response to the effects of destruction, neglect and weathering that the walls have suffered from over the course of time. The conservation action was preceded by careful preparations and formulating a multi-year program of documentation, planning and execution of the conservation and rehabilitation measures slated to be implemented on the walls.
Now, after the Israel Antiquities Authority Conservation Department has completed the rehabilitation work there, it can be unveiled and we’ll be able to see the “facelift” the gate has undergone, and its beauty, as if it was rediscovered.

The inauguration ceremony of Jaffa Gate will take place this Wednesday at 11:30 am and will be attended by Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, the Jerusalem Development Authority chairman Moshe Leon and Director-General of the Israel Antiquities Authority Shuka Dorfman.

  Location: Tel Aviv

Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra
Itzhak Perlman is returning to Tel Aviv, and, as always, his return is intriguing and makes one want to hear him, no matter how many times he has performed here. International soloists and conductors return nearly every year to perform with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, without bringing much new to the concertgoers. But Perlman is a different story: This is a love story with the audience.

The IPO knows that Perlman's magic never fades and his personality speaks to everyone, so it's offering Perlman to everyone. Like every year, the tickets are selling out fast.  Perlman, with utter modesty, assumes he's loved because he's Israeli. Tell him other Israelis appearing with the Philharmonic see a different attitude, and he suggests, "Apparently, I smile a lot."

Shavuot, the Feast of the Weeks, is a Jewish holiday that occurs on the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan (late May or early June). Shavuot, which means "weeks", refers to the timing of the festival which is held exactly seven weeks after Passover. Shavuot marks the anniversary of the day when the Jewish people was given the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai. It is one of the three Biblical pilgrimage festivals (Passover being the first, and Sukkot the third), occurring exactly fifty days after the second day of Passover.Shavuot is also connected to the season of the grain harvest in Israel. In ancient times, the grain harvest lasted seven weeks and was a season of gladness. It began with the harvesting of the barley during Passover and ended with the harvesting of the wheat at Shavuot. Shavuot was thus the concluding festival of the grain harvest. It was also the first day on which individuals could bring the Bikkurim (first fruits) to the Temple in Jerusalem. The Bikkurim were brought from the Seven Species for which the Land of Israel is praised: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates. In Israel, Shavuot is celebrated for one day and it complete with special prayers, holiday candle lighting and Kiddush.

The Miracle of Hanukkah
  Date: 22/12/2008 - 30/12/2008

Hanukkah is an eight day Jewish holiday also known as the Festival of Lights, beginning on the 25th day of Kislev, the third month of the Hebrew calendar.Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem by the Maccabees in 165 BC after the Jews overpowered the Hellenist Syrians in Jerusalem.  Antiochus Epiphanes, the Greek King of Syria, outlawed Jewish rituals and ordered the Jews to worship Greek gods. Antiochus' actions proved to be a major miscalculation as they provoked a large-scale revolt.  A Jewish priest named Mattathias, and his five sons led a rebellion against Antiochus and his men. Judah, one of Mattathias sons took his place as a leader after he died and became known as Yehuda HaMakabi ("Judah the Hammer").  The Jewish revolt was successful and the temple was liberated, purified from all idol worship and rededicated in an eight day celebration that was made by the Maccabees. According to the Talmud, when the Maccabees looked for olive oil which was required for the menorah of the Temple to burn day and night, they couldn't find more than one small flask that had enough oil to burn for only one day. Yet, miraculously, the oil lasted eight days, the time needed to prepare new supply of oil for the menorah. Ever since, Hanukkah is observed by the kindling of the lights of a special candelabrum, also know as 'Hanukiah', one candle is lit on each night of the holiday, progressing to eight on the final night. Special blessings are recited before or after the candles are lit and the hymn 'Ma'oz Tzur' and other Hanukkah songs are sung while remaining within sight of the candles. The traditional customs of the holiday are eating potato pancakes and doughnuts fried in oil and playing with dreidel, a four sided spinning top imprinted with a Hebrew letter on each side that represent acronym for the Hebrew words – Nes Gadol Haya Sham – "A great miracle happened there".

Jerusalem Day Presentation

"Ke'ir shechubra la yachdav - "Built-up Jerusalem is like a city that was joined together" (Psalm 122:3).

On the 28th day of Iyar 1967 , June 7, during the 6-Day War, Israel Defence Force broke through to the "Old City" by way of the "Lions' Gate" and hoisted the Israeli flag over the "Western Wall" (the last surviving remnant of the Second Temple). East Jerusalem was liberated and the subsequent reunification of Jerusalem after 19 years since the War of Independence.

Following the 6-Day War victory, on June 27, 1967, the Government presented the Knesset with three law proposals. These proposals determined the effective unification of Jerusalem and sanctioned the application of Israeli law in the entire area of the unified city. The municipal boundaries of the city were altered and its area was increased threefold: from 38,100 dunams to 110,000 dunams. At the same time a law was adopted that enabled free access to the holy places by the members of every religion. In 1980, the Basic Law: Jerusalem was adopted. This law determined that Jerusalem was the capital of Israel and the location of all state authorities.

On May 12, 1968, the Government decided to make the 28th of Iyar the symbolic holiday, Jerusalem Day , a day that symbolizes the continued historical connection of the Jewish People to Jerusalem. Thirty years later, this holiday became anchored in the law: On March 23 1998, the Knesset passed the second and third readings of the "Jerusalem Day Law", which determined that the date that Jerusalem was liberated during the 6-Day War was now a national holiday

The day is marked by state ceremonies, memorial services for soldiers who died in the battle for Jerusalem, parades through downtown Jerusalem, reciting the Hallel prayer in synagogues, lectures on Jerusalem-related topics, singing and dancing, and special television programming. Schoolchildren throughout the country learn about significance of Jerusalem, and schools in the city itself hold festive assemblies. The mayor holds a reception open to the general public.

Today, Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, has become a large and expansive city. It stands as an inspiration not only to residents of Israel and the Jewish People but also to the entire world. Jerusalem attracts tourists from around the world who come to see her beauty, to imbibe of her past and make pilgrimage to the holy sites, which serve as a place for prayer and a connecting point for the members of all three major religions.

Celebrating 60 years of Independence to Israel!
  Date: 08/05/2008 - 01/12/2008

Israel's 60th anniversary official site

60 years ago, on May 14, 1948, our first Prime Minister David Ben Gurion, of blessed memory, called together members of the People's Council, representatives of the Jewish Community of Eretz Israel and of the Zionist Movement to proclaim the establishment of the state of Israel.

"...by virtue of our natural and historic right and on the strength of the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, hereby declare the establishment of a Jewish state in Eretz-Israel, to be known as the State of Israel".  (The Declaration of Independence)

Following this historic and exciting announcement Israel had to face its first war against rejection by neighboring Arab countries. The war for Israel's Independence wasn't easy and caused heavy Israeli losses: More than 6,000 dead including almost 4,000 soldiers - almost 1% of the total population at the time. This was a heartbreaking experience but the spirit of the people of Israel was not broken.

The war of Independence opened a new chapter in the history of the people of Israel. They have returned to their land and achieved sovereignty after two thousand years of exile. Unfortunately, the young country has had to face a long continuing fight over its existence and this continues up to the present day.
Nevertheless, Israel has achieved some remarkable accomplishments that have dumbfounded the world and has become one of the leading and foremost countries in scientific progress, high technology and medical research. Israel is also a frontrunner in water conservation and geothermal energy. It is the most industrially and economically successful nation in the Middle East and one of the most multicultural and multi-linguistic societies in the world. No wonder Israel, the Holy Land, is one of the largest centers of attraction in the world for the members of three major religions.

This year, proudly Israel is celebrating its 60th Anniversary with events and projects that shall focus on inculcating educational, cultural and artistic values among the youth. Emphasis shall also be placed on strengthening religious tolerance and civic awareness, strengthening the connection with the history of the State of Israel and the Jewish People, and strengthening awareness of nature, heritage, landscape and environmental values.

Come, see and enjoy Israel for yourself – "this year, in Jerusalem!"

THE JERUSALEM INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR
  Date: 15/02/2008 - 20/02/2008
  Location: Jerusalem

Jerusalem Book Fair
THE JERUSALEM INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR [JIBF] is a unique biennial event which draws over 1200 publishers from more that 40 countries who display more than 100,000 books in different languages.
The year 1995 marked the first time we had participants from the Arab world, including Morocco, Egypt and Jordan, and they have continued to attend the JIBF in ensuing years. At the February 2005 JIBF, Palestinians, Arab and Israeli writers participated in a unique literary enounter attendedby numerous publishers, editors and writer from around the world.
One of the JIBF's innovations inaugurated in 1985 is its unique Editorial Fellowship Program which invites a group of young promising and talented editors to attend the Fair to meet and exchange ideas with their contemporaries. This program has become one of JIBF's strongest attractions and its members have forged professional relationships and personal friendships that have lasted through the years. In the light of the success of this program, JIBF has launched a parallel fellowship program for Literary Agents. Many of our Editorial and Agent Alumni have gone on to prestigious and influential positions in the publishing field, and several return each year to Israel to meet and mentor new "fellows".
One of the JIBF's important events is the awarding of the prestigious Jerusalem Prize to a writer whose work best expresses and promotes the idea of the "freedom of the individual in society". We are proud to have awarded The Jerusalem Prize to five writers who have also received the Nobel Literary Prize.

New Masada Museum
  Date: 22/05/2007 - 22/05/2007
  Location: MASADA

In May 2007, a unique and innovative museological experience was introduced at Masada. Combining archaeological artifacts and a theatrical atmosphere, together with accompanying radio play and audio explanations, it creates a meaningful guided tour of the Story of Masada.
The archaeological artifacts, dug at the site of Masada between 1963 and 1965 by the  Hebrew University of Jerusalem under the direction of the late Professor Yigael Yadin, are exhibited in illuminated showcases spread over nine theatrical scenes. The artifacts focus around three main themes: Herod, the Rebels, and the Roman Army.
The integration and harmony between archaeological artifacts, theatrical backdrop, radio play, and audio presentation create a unique experience that invites the visitor to become one with the amazing story of Masada. The strong tie between the archaeological artifacts and the accompanying backdrop finds expression in each of the nine spaces.
