Our Highlights of Israel + Petra tour is a journey for all faiths, opening a window to Israel’s history – past and present, its people and diverse cultures, with the added opportunity to visit one of the new 7 wonders of the world. With a professional guide, explore the iconic sites of Jerusalem’s Old City, Nazareth and Bethlehem; ride the cable car to the fortress of Masada and float at the lowest place on earth – the Dead Sea. In the north of the country, visit the serene Galilee and the Golan Heights. Other key sites visited on the tour include Haifa, Caesarea and the crusader fortress of Acre, a night in Israel’s southernmost city – Eilat, before travelling to neighbouring Jordan to marvel at the ancient red-rock city of Petra.
This tour begins every Sunday with a minimum of 2 participants.
Sunday – Tel Aviv
Upon arrival to the airport you will meet our representative and transfer to your hotel in Tel Aviv for overnight.
Monday – Tel Aviv / Beer Sheba / Masada & Dead Sea
Leave Tel Aviv driving south, passing by Ashdod and Ashkelon en route to Beersheba, for a drive through the Negev capital. Continue via Arad to Masada. Ascend by cable car to the fortress, which was the last stronghold of the Jewish Zealots in their war against the Romans. Visit the excavations including Herod’s palaces, the synagogue, bathhouse and cisterns. Enjoy the breathtaking view of the Roman camps and the Dead Sea. Descend for a “float” in the salty water of the world’s lowest place – the Dead Sea. Proceed to Jerusalem for overnight.
Tuesday – Jerusalem – Sightseeing of the New City
Start the day with a panoramic view of Jerusalem from atop the Mt. of Olives. On to the Garden of Gethsemane and Church of the Agony. Continue to the Israel Museum’s Shrine of the Book with the famous Dead Sea scrolls, then a visit to the beautifully renovated model of the Herodian city of Jerusalem, dating back to the time of the Second Temple. Continue to Yad Vashem (the memorial to the six million Jews who were killed in the Holocaust). Afternoon drive to visit the picturesque village of Ein Karem (the traditional birth-place of John the Baptist). In the heart of a neighborhood in downtown Jerusalem, visit Mahane Yehuda to experience the flavors, aromas, colors and the traders’ interaction with the crowds, at the largest open market in Israel. Return to Hotel.
Wednesday – Jerusalem – Old City & Bethlehem*
Enter through one of the gates to the walled Old City to visit the renewed Jewish Quarter, the Western Wall, the Temple area and the colorful bazaars.
Walk along the Via Dolorosa and the Stations of the Cross, ending at th Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Continue to Mt. Zion and visit the tomb of King David, the Room of the Last Supper and Dormition Abbey. In the afternoon continue to Bethlehem to visit the Church of the Nativity and a view of the Shepherd’s Fields.* Return to Jerusalem for overnight.
Thursday – Beit Shean / Nazareth / Galilee
Leave Jerusalem and drive north, passing by Jericho, the oldest city in the world. Travel through the Jordan Valley to Beit Shean. Visit the excavations of this beautifully preserved Roman City. Proceed to Nazareth to visit the Church of the Annunciation and the carpentry workshop of Joseph. On to Safed, city of the Kabala, for a walk through the mystic alleys, a visit to a synagogue and the artists’ colony. Continue to a Kibbutz hotel for overnight.
Friday – Golan Heights and around the Sea of Galilee
Drive to the Golan Heights, passing by the Druze villages. Visit a former Syrian fortification on the heights. Pass by Banias, source of the Jordan River. Enjoy an Israeli wine country experience, with vineyards surrounded by breathtaking views. Become acquainted with the collection of fine and rare wines
enjoying a tour, wine tasting and understanding of the wine production process. Descending to the shores of the Sea of Galilee, visit the Mount of Beatitudes and the ruins of the ancient synagogue and Peter’s house at Capernaum. Visit Tabgha, where the miracle of the fish and bread took place.
Continue to Tiberias for a short tour of the old center of Jewish learning. Optional sailing in a boat across the Sea of Galilee to experience the
tranquility and scenery little changed during the past 2000 years (subject to conditions and fee). Return to the Kibbutz hotel for overnight.
Saturday – Acre / Haifa / Caesarea / Eilat
After Breakfast drive west to Acre for a visit of the old, famous Crusader stronghold and medieval fortifications.Continue to Haifa, for a panoramic sightseeing tour of the city, including the Baha’i Shrine, Persian Garden, Mount Carmel and Haifa bay. Proceed southwards to Caesarea to visit the ancient port, including the Roman Theater and the Hippodrome. Continue to Tel Aviv‘s domestic airport for a short flight to Eilat, the Red Sea resort. Upon arrival take a taxi to the hotel for overnight.
Sunday – Eilat – Petra – Eilat
After breakfast leave Eilat, Israel and cross into Jordan at the Arava border. Drive to Petra through the scenic Jordanian desert, passing by the Wadi Rum area. Enter the Rose City of Petra through the Siq, a narrow passage through the mountains that has inspired people for centuries. Up to the Treasury which suddenly appears at the end of the gorge, leaving visitors breath taken by its’ size, color and beauty. Continue into the heart of this ancient city carved into the mountains, passing hundreds of tombs and monuments and a spectacular Amphitheatre, which once held 3,000 spectators. Exit the city and stop for a sit-down lunch in Wadi Musa – the new town of Petra, followed by a visit to Moses Spring before leaving. Drive to Aqaba for a short city tour, before returning to the Arava border and back to Eilat for return flight to Tel Aviv. Transfer from Tel Aviv airport to Tel Aviv hotel for overnight.
Departure to Ben Gurion Airport for international flight.
