For centuries, Christians across the world have read the words of Scripture and longed to see the very places where the life and ministry of Jesus unfolded. One of the greatest mysteries connected to the ministry of Jesus has been the true location of Bethsaida — the village connected to several of His most powerful miracles and the hometown of some of His closest disciples.
Now, after years of archaeological excavations near the Sea of Galilee, researchers believe they may have finally uncovered the lost biblical city.
A Remarkable Discovery Near the Sea of Galilee
Archaeologists working at the site of El-Araj, located on the northeastern shore of the Sea of Galilee, recently announced that mounting evidence strongly suggests the site is ancient Bethsaida from the time of the Second Temple period.
According to the New Testament, Bethsaida was the setting for several important moments in the ministry of Jesus. It was here that Jesus healed a blind man, restoring his sight step by step (Mark 8:22–26). The village is also closely associated with the miracle of the loaves and fishes, where thousands were fed with only a few loaves of bread and fish (Luke 9:10–17; John 6:1–14).
Bethsaida was more than just a village — it was home to several of Jesus’ disciples, including Peter, Andrew, and Philip (John 1:44). Walking through this region today allows believers to connect deeply with the places where the Gospel stories unfolded.
Jesus and Bethsaida
Bethsaida is mentioned multiple times throughout the Gospels. Jesus performed miracles there, taught in the surrounding area, and even spoke words of warning to the town because many witnessed His miracles yet did not repent.
“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!”
— Matthew 11:21
This passage highlights the spiritual importance of Bethsaida during Jesus’ ministry in Galilee.
Another powerful moment connected to Bethsaida is found in the Gospel of Mark:
“They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.”
— Mark 8:22
The healing that follows is one of the most personal and unique miracles recorded in the Gospels.
Evidence That Excited the Christian World
The discoveries at El-Araj have captured worldwide attention, even reaching the Vatican City!
Among the findings uncovered by archaeologists are:
- Remains of a large Byzantine church believed to be the “Church of the Apostles”
- A first-century home beneath the church foundations
- Ancient fishing weights and Roman-era artifacts
- Beautiful mosaics mentioning Peter, known as the leader of the apostles
Researchers believe the church may have been built over the home of Peter and Andrew, following ancient Christian tradition.
Professor Moti Aviam, one of the lead Israeli archaeologists, said the evidence is now “fairly conclusive” and described the discovery as something that deeply moved Christians around the world.
