Hanukkah 2023

This week, we will begin the festivities of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. This tradition commemorates a miracle that occurred over 2000 years ago when the Jewish people triumphed over darkness, and light radiated for eight days from a single jar of oil. This year, the celebration of lights holds even greater significance for the spirit of all those in Israel and the global supporters of the nation.

Hanukkah is a moment for family celebration. On the first evening, families come together to exchange gifts while singing around the hanukkiya (Hanukah menorah) and light the first candle. These gifts may include books and games, including the traditional dreidel game. The traditional foods, music, and rituals associated with Hanukkah can serve as a source of comfort and connection, fostering a sense of community in the face of adversity.

Symbol of Light

As the sun sets, the first candle is lit, and a new candle is added each night. The warm glow of the candles symbolises hope, resilience, and the unwavering commitment to preserving faith and tradition. As the festival unfolds, the spirit of Hanukkah encourages reflection on the enduring values of faith, perseverance, and the power of miracles.

During these challenging times, we pray that families find solace in coming together to light the hanukkiya, even in the midst of uncertainty. The small flames flickering in the darkness serve as a symbol of unity, courage, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Each candle, representing a night of the miraculous oil, becomes a testament to the possibility of finding light in the darkest of moments.

Hanukkah is not merely a celebration of the past but a reminder to cherish the present and look forward to a future filled with hope, brightness, and the joy of shared traditions. Especially this year, the light shining from the hanukkiya becomes a representation of resistance against the darkness, showcasing the resilience and determination to maintain cultural and spiritual practices despite external challenges.
